Justin Edwards

About Me

I am an Assistant Professor in the Digital Studies program in Stockton University's School of Arts and Humanities. I also hold an affiliate possition as a visiting research fellow to the Faculty of Education and Psychology at the University of Oulu. I investigate how people speak to one another and to machines.

I teach classes around building and using technology in a human-centered way, to make life more fun and beautiful and simple. I try to make techincal skills like writing, coding, and statistics feel like tools anyone can use to accomplish their goals. My classes emphasize collaboration and self-regulation of learning, where we learn from each other and learn how to figure stuff out when we get stuck.

My research focuses on the design of AI agents which proactively speak to people and how proactive agent speech impacts people's ongoing tasks. My current research project, the ARTICULATE project, examines how educational speech technology can be made more engaging for informal audiences in languages other than English.
